International Expansion on Shopify - Things to Consider
Target markets
The first step to internationally expanding your Shopify store is identifying which target markets make most sense for your business. A great place to start is by spending some time reviewing your Shopify store’s analytics. This will let you see whether you already have international visitors, and from where, which may indicate there’s a potential audience for your products there.
If you don’t have any international traffic yet, this doesn’t mean there’s not an opportunity. It’s still worth investigating other markets. A good idea is to start with those that are geographically or culturally close; perhaps somewhere that speaks the same language.
Market research
As well as potential customers in your new territory, it’s also key to understand potential competitors. Do some market research, examine their products, prices, and marketing approaches to spot opportunities, capitalise on your unique selling points, and approach the market with a strategy that will make your brand stand out. Take into account cultural differences which may influence customer behaviour and product preferences.
Local laws
It’s important to have a good understanding of any local regulations surrounding products like yours before you start your expansion journey. You don’t want to get to a position where you can start selling, only to find…you can’t start selling.
Shipping and delivery
The three main shipping options to choose from are flat-rate shipping, free shipping, and carrier-calculated shipping. It’s worth creating a unique international shipping strategy rather than sticking with Shopify’s default options. Make sure you consider points including carriers, speeds, and tax requirements.
Localising your website
This refers to amending your site to make sense to a specific market. This includes language, currency, using international domains and considering cultural points.
Creating international domain names helps visitors trust that you sell to customers where they are, increasing the likelihood of them purchasing from you. You can create a subdomain in Shopify and then set its default currency.
Content translation
If you’re moving into regions with a different language, translating the text content on your website is key to making your expansion successful. Installing a translation app (available in the Shopify app store) is the simplest way to translate your website content for international visitors. The apps translate your site’s content to the appropriate language based on the visitor’s location. You can then choose which active market you wish to add the language to and import the translated content using your translation app before publishing the new language.

How Does Shopify Support International Growth for Online Retailers?
The platform itself has a wealth of features and options that help merchants expand into new territories. Here are a few options that we can help you tap into when working with you on your expansion plans.
Shopify Apps
There are a whole host of apps available in the Shopify store to help businesses manage international expansion. For example, there are apps to display prices in the local currency, apps to translate languages, and apps that show visitors the right product prices and display market recommendations depending on location.
Shopify Markets - Single Store Expansion
‘Shopify Markets’ is a single store route to internationalisation for businesses trading on the platform. It allows you to manage many of the elements involved in cross-border commerce from just one Shopify store.
Businesses can customise everything from their store’s theme and currency, to domains and business entities - all within a single shop - to create localised buyer experiences for each of their markets. Customers see content in their local language and other localised content.
Shopify Payments
Shopify Payments allows merchants to accept payments directly through their Shopify store without relying on third-party payment gateways. It also works for international commerce.
Shopify Payments lets you sell in multiple currencies, and prices are automatically converted based on real-time exchange rates. It also supports major international credit cards and local payment methods in different regions, plus digital wallets like Apple Pay and Google Pay.
It also supports localised checkout to help customers trust your site, manages local taxes and displays them at checkout, includes built-in fraud detection, and encrypts data for security.
Selling Internationally Using a Multi-Store Approach
Shopify Plus - Expansion Stores
Multi-stores
Shopify Plus includes all the international features and resources that the Shopify plan offers, like multicurrency, language translation, pricing and shipping settings.
A key difference from ‘Markets’ is that Shopify Plus supports nine expansion stores for internationalisation, separate physical locations, and other related purposes (compared to Shopify where it’s a single store deal). It’s worth noting too that expansion stores need a theme licence for each live expansion store.
Multi-store benefits
One benefit of an individual Shopify store per country or region is that you have complete control over every single option and element when setting up that store.
Another plus is having control over the content and copy of each store - you can run unique campaigns based on the market you are trading in.
Multi-store challenges
Some things to consider with this approach include the additional resources required to manage and maintain multiple stores, inventory management, logistics and marketing. You'll need to be able to manage multiple independent instances of your online busiess.
